Close to 8 Months post knee reconstruction, I thought I’d get back into racing downhill. Newtons Nation was the race I chose as there was a lot of prize money up for grabs which would draw out some tough competition. The 8 hour drive down to Bathurst was tough, but we’ll worth the amount of fun I had.
The track was super short, fast times we’re under 1:30. Friday practice went good, I just had fun riding my bike for the 3rd time since I got the all clear. Newtons Nation was a big extreme sports/music festival, so in between runs I would go for a cruise and watch some BMX dirt, or have a look at the live bands on stage.
Saturday practice after a freezing cold 2 degree night went good. I started picking up the pace and knew the times would be super tight. Seeding was in the afternoon. I saved myself a little as I always do, but was still surprised to be beaten by Chris Kovarik by almost 4 seconds!! Kovariks time a 1:17.83. Myself back on a 1:21.67.
Sunday I really had to knuckle down and find some time, and I did just that. My run was quite good, I linked everything up and had heaps of fun. I think I could have pre selected my gears better to snap in pedals out of all the turns. In the end I finished 2nd with a time of 1:18.48, behind Chris Kovarik on a 1:17.48.
Stoked to be back racing again and I’m pumped to be heading overseas in only 2 weeks!
I still need to work on my fitness but i’m certainly making progress.
A big thanks to my team Suspension Centre/Intense and all our co sponsors for all their hard work and support.
See you at Leogang IXS
